Bentley Arnage Project - Interior lights fixed.

Just writing up some notes here in the hope it helps somebody, I struggled to find the info I needed, but as I have fixed mine I thought I would help anybody else struggling with it.

My car is a 1998 model, other years may be different. My research had pointed me towards an interior lights delay module, part number UD26559, from it's description I was pretty sure that would be where my problem was, namely my interior lights were not coming on when the car was unlocked. As I found out, 1998 Arnages do not use this relay, the light control is built in to an ecu. The first thing you notice about the Bentley is that there are no pin switches in the doors, the switches are built in to the door lock mechanism. Check your driver's one is working by getting in the car, putting the key in the ignition, turn to position 1 and open the door. If the buzzer sounds you know your switch is working on the driver's door at least.

Next thing if that's ok is to go to the fuse box in the passenger footwell, this will be the driver's one on American cars, I'm assuming the fuse boxes are in the same place on both left and right hand drive cars. You will see a load of fuses and relays, right at the bottom you will see four smaller yellow relays, the one at the very bottom left is the relay for interior lighting. there is also a fuse there, number 15, 10 amp, check that first. I pulled the relay and shorted pins 30 and 87 of the relay base, sure enough my interior lights all lit as they should. I believe the relay is controlled by the ECU, it does not dim like more modern cars, it's just on or off. It might get it's signal from the central locking module, I have not had to go that far back so don't know for sure. Being right at the very bottom of the panel it is a bit exposed to people with large hob nail boots, mine did indeed look physically damaged.

When I put my hand on the relay to pull it I could feel it was warm so I know the coil was getting 12v from whatever controls it, It's just a standard single pole single throw item - at the time of writing I bought 2 from Amazon for just 8 quid delivered. They are available as either 20 or 30 amp, I bought the 30 amp ones, I just figure it made sense to do so.

The vacant slot bottom left is where I removed the interior lighting relay from. Don't bother looking for the timer relay fitted in previous models, it doesn't exist in the Arnage. The red fuse second one up from the bottom is the 10 amp fuse for the interior lights. You might have to remove a bit of trim to get the relay in and out easily. The panel is usually covered by a piece of carpeted trim, which simply pulls off.
