Just a brief one this, in case it helps somebody out. My mate came to me saying his van wasn't running right and that it had gone in to limp mode. I only have a basic code reader rather than a VW specific one but it was good enough to tell me that it had a p0201 code as well as 3 others. The 3 others cleared and din't come back, I believe they were caused by the misfire rather than being the cause, the 0201 code came straight back every time we started the car.
I did the usual, disconnected the plug from the injector - the code says cylinder 1 - the one right at the front of the engine. I measured the resistance of the coil of the injector, it was about 0.8 ohms, i compared it with number 2, it was the same. that told me the injector was fine. Next job was to connect a NOID light to the injector plug, I was pretty sure I had found the fault before we cranked it - the light felt very loose in the plug. I got my mate to crank it and sure enough the light didn't flash until I twisted it to force it to make contact. It was obvious the rather cheap looking and feeling connector was knackered.
I used some fine needle nose pliers to squeeze the contacts so they made better contact and the light was flashing reliably. I connected it back up, cleared the code again and left ir running for about 10 minutes, all fine. Took it for a test drive of about 15 miles, all good so it's sort of fixed. I say sort of because all the plugs look a bit mullered and really need replacing. They can be had for about 4 quid each, they come with wire tails so they can be easily soldered to the existing wiring.
So what looked like a potentially expensive and complex job was actually very simple and under 20 quid to fix. The connectors appear to be very bad quality so I am assuming this is a common problem, it may also be the same on a number of other VW diesel vehicles. Hope it helps somebody out.
